Same-Day Crowns: How CAD/CAM Dentistry Works

Learn how CAD/CAM technology can design and mill a ceramic crown in a single visit, and when a traditional lab crown is still the better choice.

Computer-aided design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM) allows some crowns to be designed, milled and placed in one appointment instead of two.

The process

  • The tooth is prepared
  • A digital scan is taken
  • The crown is designed on a computer
  • A milling unit carves it from a ceramic block
  • It is finished and bonded in place

Pros and limits

Same-day crowns avoid a temporary crown and a second visit. However, complex cases, bridges or highly customized aesthetics may still be best handled by a dental laboratory.

Before you go

Not every clinic offers every technology described here. Ask our team which options are available at Nova Family Dental and whether they suit your situation.

Common questions

Do same-day crowns last?

Well-made ceramic crowns can last many years with good care. Longevity depends on bite forces, grinding habits and hygiene.

Are they covered by insurance?

Coverage is usually based on the crown itself, not the method. Check your plan's crown benefits.
