Cone Beam CT: 3D Imaging for Implants and Complex Cases

What cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) shows that regular X-rays cannot, and when dentists recommend it.

Standard dental X-rays are flat images. Cone beam CT creates a three-dimensional view of teeth, bone and nerves, helping with careful planning.

When CBCT is used

  • Planning dental implant position
  • Assessing impacted wisdom teeth
  • Complex root canal anatomy
  • Evaluating jaw bone and sinuses

Radiation considerations

CBCT uses more radiation than a single dental X-ray but usually less than a medical CT scan. It is recommended only when 3D information would change the treatment plan.

Common questions

Is a CBCT scan uncomfortable?

No. You stand or sit still for less than a minute while the machine rotates around your head.

Does every implant need a CBCT?

Many dentists consider 3D imaging important for implant planning, but the decision depends on the case.
