Teeth Whitening: Professional Options vs At-Home Products

Why teeth yellow, how professional whitening compares with drugstore products, what whitening cannot fix, and how to keep the results.

Whitening is one of the most requested cosmetic treatments — and one of the most confusing, with everything from dentist-supervised gels to strips and influencers' charcoal powders on the shelf. Here is how the options actually compare.

Why teeth yellow in the first place

Surface stains come from coffee, tea, red wine and smoking, and professional cleaning removes much of them. But teeth also yellow with age as the outer enamel thins and the yellower dentin beneath shows through. That deeper colour is what whitening products work on.

The main options compared

The strength and control differ most. Professionally supervised whitening uses higher-concentration gel with gum protection and a plan based on what is actually causing the colour — so results are faster and more even.

  • In-office whitening: stronger gel applied and monitored by a dental team, often completed in one visit
  • Custom take-home trays: trays made from your teeth with a professional gel worn daily for one to two weeks
  • Drugstore strips and trays: lower-strength peroxide, can lighten mild surface stains unevenly
  • Charcoal and DIY remedies: abrasive or acidic; can wear enamel rather than whiten, and are not recommended

What whitening cannot fix

Whitening works on natural tooth structure only. Fillings, crowns and veneers do not change colour, which matters if front teeth have restorations. Some discolouration is internal — from a previous injury, a root-treated tooth or certain medications during tooth development — and those cases need other approaches such as internal whitening or a veneer or crown.

Safety and sensitivity

Supervised whitening is not harmful to enamel when used as directed. Temporary sensitivity to cold for a day or two is the most common side effect and settles on its own; we can adjust the strength or frequency if it becomes uncomfortable.

Keeping the results

Results are not permanent — the same habits that stained the teeth will slowly re-stain them. Regular cleanings, moderating coffee and tea, not smoking, and occasional touch-up whitening keep the shade where you want it.

Common questions

Is teeth whitening bad for your teeth?

Dentist-supervised whitening used as directed does not damage enamel. Unsupervised use of strong products, or abrasive DIY remedies, can cause sensitivity and wear.

How long do whitening results last?

Typically months to a few years depending on diet and habits. Coffee, tea, red wine and smoking shorten it; regular cleanings and occasional touch-ups extend it.

Can yellow teeth become white again?

Often, yes. Stains from food and drink respond well to professional cleaning and whitening. Discolouration from injury or certain medications may need a different treatment instead.

What is the best way to whiten teeth?

It depends on the cause of the discolouration. A dental assessment identifies whether cleaning, professional whitening or a restoration will actually get the result you want — which saves money on products that cannot address your case.
